Architectural vs. 3-tab shingles: what to compare before ordering

Understand the product names

Three-tab shingles are also called strip shingles and have a single-layer construction. Architectural shingles are also called dimensional or laminate shingles; their layered construction creates a more dimensional appearance. CertainTeed’s shingle overview explains these categories, including the separate luxury-shingle category.

Compare the exact line, not just the category

“Architectural” does not identify a specific product. Record the manufacturer, line, color and SKU from your quote or specification. Compare the manufacturer’s information for those exact products rather than assuming every shingle in a category has the same coverage, rating or warranty. GAF’s guide to shingle types is a useful starting point for understanding the different appearances.

Compare prices using coverage

A lower bundle price does not automatically mean a lower material cost for the same roof area. Check each product’s coverage per bundle and compare the quantities needed for the same approved takeoff. Keep starter strips, hip-and-ridge shingles and other accessories on separate lines so the comparison includes the materials your project calls for.

Confirm the choice before placing the order

Have your contractor confirm the selected product and accompanying materials. Review the actual color with the warehouse when possible, and confirm current stock for that SKU. Browse the catalog for product information, then build a material quote using the approved selection.

Bring your material list to A+.

Compare products in the catalog, then contact the warehouse to confirm your order and arrange pickup or delivery.
